YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
Youth empowerment is a process that enables young people to gain the
ability to make positive changes in their lives and communities. It involves
providing young people with the necessary resources, skills, and opportunities
to take control of their lives and become active participants in society.
Empowering young people is essential for the progress of
humankind and the health of the planet. Today, the world is home to the largest
generation of young people in history, with 1.2 billion people1. However, many
young people face major challenges in both the developed and developing world.
While many developed countries have seen prospects for younger generations
plummet, many developing countries struggle to create enough employment to
absorb their demographic youth bulge.
Investing in young people opens the door to an
unparalleled multiplier effect. Connected to each other like never before
through digital technologies, young people want to, and already contribute to,
the resilience of their communities, proposing innovative solutions, driving
social progress, and inspiring political change, in both urban and rural
contexts.
To empower young people, it is important to provide them
with access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. It is also
important to establish targets for youth participation, in particular for
funding and training programs so that youth are being offered opportunities for
empowerment. This will help to ensure young people’s full involvement in the
safeguarding and transmission of living heritage; in the conservation of
tangible heritage; and in the cultural and creative industries.
